right now at 11:00, the hunt is on for a reckless robber in the south bay. the threats he made with a shotgun and a surveillance pictures officers want you to see. plus, the common mani/pedi being billed as medical treatment. the owners of a popular south bay spa accused of cheating insurance companies out of millions of dollars. and a small but key stretch of freeway in san francisco shut down. how it could affect your holiday weekend plans. good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. peggy bunker has the rest of the morning off. we begin with new details in a bold robbery in the south bay. investigators in morgan hill are on the lookout for a man who
11:01 am
threatened a shopper with a shotgun before robbing a fast food restaurant. this all happened last night in morgan hill at the target parking lot and subway. you can see there on opposite sides of highway 101 there near cochran road. nbc bay area's bob redell is live in morgan hill. bob, police released a pretty good surveillance picture of this guy. >> reporter: they do. good morning, scott. we expect morgan hill police to pull up at the subway here at any moment with its surveillance video to show what it shows. but the target store down the street did capture a remarkably clear shot of this suspect. you can see, he's the man there with the mohawk. and because this man made no effort at all to conceal his identity, that's what concerns police. to think that a man armed with a gun would be that gutsy and carefree. >> the fact that he's just going to go ahead and do what he wants and doesn't care for his safety or the safety of others or his
11:02 am
concealment makes it more dangerous, i believe. >> reporter: morgan hill police wonder if this man with the mohawk is on something last night as he lingered inside the target store on cochran road. then around 9:00, pulled up to a woman in the store's parking lot, pointed a shotgun at her, and demanded her purse. she freaked out, according to police, and ran away, unharmed. undeterred, he used that shotgun five minutes later to rob the subway down the street, escaping with the money from the till. >> i like to think it's a safe town, but obviously -- >> reporter: well, this is only one guy. >> -- not so safe. >> reporter: do you feel safe in morgan hill? >> during the day. i don't go out at night to the stores unless my daughter or husband's with me. >> reporter: how long have you been doing that for? >> the last year or so. and we've lived here since '76. >> reporter: what's changed? >> i don't know. people moving in. i don't know. >> reporter: this suspect was driving a white sedan.
11:03 am
it was either a dodge neon, chevy cavalier. and the forensic team with the morgan hill police department, they're trying to see if he can enhance the picture to get at clearer shot of that license plate number. he's a white man with that mohawk. they believe he's in his 20s. he has a tattoo on his left wrist and last hand and last seen wearing a black t-shirt green shorts, plaque and white shoes. police did dust for fingerprints a t the target and here at the subway, but so far, they've had no hits. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> all right, bob, thank you. happening today, the woman accused of attacking a 4-year-old girl with a tire iron at a walmart will be in court. police say maria garoti entered the walmart last week and hit a little girl in the head. she's there behind her lawyer. the girl's father blocked the second blow. the officers say that's when she started singing show tunes and posing for surveillance cameras
11:04 am
before getting down on the ground and waiting for police. the 20-year-old faces charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with a hate crime enhancement. the little girl is asian and garoti allegedly said she picked out the little girl because of her race. the little girl is expected to recover. the south bay woman accused of stabbing her baby to death will be back in court this morning. 22-year-old ashley newton was arrested last month. investigators say she drove her 7-month-old boy to a park in livermore, deliberately recked the car, and stabbed the child. when she was found, officials say she also had stab wounds that were believed to have been self-inflicted. today, her lawyer will give the court an update on her condition. she may enter a plea. a small, yet very important stretch of freeway in san francisco is closed right now, and it will be all holiday weekend long. southbound 280 near at&t park, leaving the city, all the way to pennsylvania avenue, is closed.
11:05 am
nbc bay area's christie smith is in san francisco with the reason for the partial shutdown. >> reporter: well, good morning to you. it's actually a small stretch of road, only about 2 miles, but closing it will have a big impact, especially on a holiday weekend. caltrans is saying about 60,000 drivers use southbound 280 any given day, but not the next couple of days. and that's because of seismic safety work that's going on. these workers are replacing hinges that are about a foot beneath the roadway. they're 50 years old and outdated. cal trans says no one uses them anymore. so the closure basically runs from near at&t park to pennsylvania avenue. drivers, locals, people visiting will have plenty of company on city streets during the closure. they can try alternate ramps, the already crowded 101 or public transportation. carnival is happening, the giants have a six-game home stand and fans are encouraged to leave their cars at home. the demo work is first up and
11:06 am
it's moving right along. >> we anticipate being through before lunch. that's what the demolition part. we're going to remove the hinges and replace them and then pour concrete. and hopefully this job will be completed by 5:00 tuesday morning. that's our goal. >> they had actually considered leaving one lane open on southbound 280, but their models showed that that would leave about a seven-mile backup and they didn't want to do that. now, even after the reopening tuesday morning, that's not the end of it. on the fourth of july and labor day weekend, the same type of work will be happening on the northbound lanes. in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, thank you. let's bring in mike inouye. and this closure is going to have some effect. in fact, it already is, mike, as things begin to bog down. >> scott, that's whatwe we're
11:07 am
seeing right now. we expect at 11:06 on a friday to see a backup. but let's look at the live sensors for our maps. we have a slow drive across that span. the backup getting into the city very popular, but this is slower than we typically have. there was an earlier incident at treasure island, westbound, but that has long since cleared. getting into the city, getting off of the bay bridge in towards southbound 101, picking up all this overload as folks avoid that approach of 280 that christie smith was talking about. now, anywhere south of cesar chavez, if you get on south of there, you're just fine for southbound 280. let's look at your best bet, though. to avoid the area altogether, but if you have to go that way, here's some suggestions for you. caltrans says southbound traffic, you can detour 101 we just showed you, but surface street traffic, mariposa and 18th street, very tough getting there. same thing for southbound pennsylvania avenue, which runs alongside 280 southbound. important note, the northbound side of 280 will remain open the entire holiday weekend, getting you to at&t park is okay.
11:08 am
we have extensive information on the 280 closure and how to get around on surface streets for you. that's on our website, nbcbayarea.com. all you have to do is search for 280 closure, scott. this will, indeed, affect folks getting to and from at&t park, even if you head out there, scott, you are not immune. keep that in mind. >> i'm not immune. mike inouye, thank you much. community organizers today will hold a news conference to talk about rising racial tension in the city of salinas. groups from across the state will announce today that they will join the alliance for respect, dignity, and justice. they're going to march on sunday in response to a recent shooting involving two police officers. the officer shot and killed a man tuesday, who they say lungeed at them with gardening shears. several protests have broken out since then. the two owners of a popular san jose spa are being accused of one of the biggest medical frauds in the bay area. this morning, they're accused of using their spa, the san jose
11:09 am
chiro spa to bilk insurance companies out of more than $7 million. the investigation, dubbed operation nail polish, began in 2012. prosecutors say an undercover investigator went into the spa numerous times for manicures and pedicures. employees reportedly took the investigators' insurance information and charged the insurance company for chiropractic treatments. they say about 90% of the spa's business was billed fraudulently. the owners will be in court next month. new at 11:00, donald sterling has agreed to swrerurrr his stake in the l.a. clippers to his wife and she's moving forward with selling the team. this from a person with knowledge of the negotiations. the couple made the agreement after weeks of discussion. the nba commissioner banned donald sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million because of racist comments. now, meanwhile, the wl narrow owner of another nba team is apologizing the to trayvon martin's family for what some
11:10 am
are calling insensitive comments. maverick owner, mark cuban, talking about donald sterling and that controversy. he said, quote, everyone has prejudices one way or the other. >> if i see a black kid in a hoodie at night on the other side of the street, you know, i'll probably -- on the same side soft street, i'll probably walk to the other side of the street. if i see a white guy with a shaved head and lots of tattoos, i'm going back to the other side of the street. but other than safety issues, i try to always catch my prejudices and recognize and be very self-aware that, you know, my stream of thought is never perfect and i've got to be careful. >> now, trayvon martin was the teenager who was wearing a hoodie when he was shot and killed two years ago. cuban apologized to the martin family for the hoodie reference. he says it's out of context from his comments and he says he also calls for more tolerance. no b.a.r.t., no problem. the late-night transportation
